Standalone wireless link without a router (box-to-box)

Directly mirror wireless switching signals via a self-contained access point network

If you need to mirror switching signals point-to-point without an existing IT infrastructure or time-consuming network configurations, standalone mode is the ideal choice. A WLAN-IO Digital acts as an access point (server) and sets up its own closed WPA2 wireless network, to which the second WLAN-IO automatically logs in as a client and establishes the connection.

1. Set up your own Wi-Fi network (Device A – Server)

In the web interface of the first WLAN-IO (Device A), navigate to the Wi-Fi Settings.

Select the option “The WLAN-IO provides its own Wi-Fi network…” to enable the access point.

Assign a unique SSID (for example, WLANIO-0ADCF3) as well as a WPA2 password, and select a fixed wireless channel (e.g., Channel 1).

Configuring the Inputs and Outputs (Setting the I/O Direction)

The 4 digital channels of the WLAN-IO Digital can be flexibly configured as inputs or outputs. In the web interface, under IOs select the desired operating mode for each channel:

Complementary assignment: Every channel defined as an input on Device A must be configured as an output on Device B, and vice versa.
Example of bidirectional mixed operation:
Device A: IO 0, IO 1, and IO 2 as Input, IO 3 as Output.
Device B: IO 0, IO 1, and IO 2 as Output, IO 3 as Input.
Applying the settings: After assigning the direction, apply the configuration via Save.

2. Enable the Box-to-Box server (Device A – Server)

Go to the Box-to-Box and set the slider to “Enable.”

Select Server mode. The device is now passively waiting for the client to establish a connection.

Specify the local TCP port (for example, 49157).

Enable IO channels: Check the boxes next to the desired channels to enable tunneling. Only actively enabled inputs are transmitted to the other end, and only enabled outputs can be switched by the partner box. Then click Save.

3. Connect to the access point (Device B – Client)

Open the web interface for Device B and navigate to Wi-Fi. Select “The WLAN-IO connects to a Wi-Fi network as a client…”.

Search for the SSID of the network set up by Device A (e.g., WLANIO-0ADCF3) and enter the password provided there.

Assign the device a static IP address on the same subnet (for example, 192.168.1.2), so that the box-to-box remote station can be addressed directly.

4. Set up a client connection to the B2B server (Device B – Client)

On Device B, go to the menu Box-to-Box and enable the function.
Select Client. Since the client must actively establish the connection, it needs the server’s destination information.
In the field IP Address enter the server IP (Device A, e.g. 192.168.1.1) and the configured TCP port (49157).

Enable IO channels: On the client, also select the appropriate checkboxes for the inputs and outputs you want to mirror. Click Save. The client now establishes a connection to the server.

Troubleshooting & Diagnosis for Connection Loss

If the wireless connection between the devices is lost or the client cannot reach the server, the web interface immediately signals this: In the top-left corner of the main menu, a red exclamation point appears right next to the three lines.

Click the menu and navigate to the entry highlighted in red to see where the configuration is incorrect or the connection is failing.

On the Diagnostics subpage the box also displays the current error status in the yellow warning bar: “The box-to-box connection has not been established.” In this case, check the Wi-Fi signal strength and make sure the passwords and IP addresses are spelled correctly.
